New Delhi, August 18, 2026: Bollywood actor Sunny Deol has opened up about one of the most difficult financial phases of his career, revealing that he remained happy even while carrying a debt of nearly ₹55.99 crore and facing an e-auction notice for his Juhu property.
The actor discussed his financial struggles during a conversation on Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast, explaining that the debt was connected to his own investments and film projects rather than money borrowed from individuals.
Bank Had Issued Auction Notice for Juhu Property
In 2023, shortly after the massive success of Gadar 2, a bank issued an e-auction notice for Sunny Deol’s Juhu property, Sunny Villa, over outstanding dues and interest amounting to ₹55.99 crore.
The notice was subsequently withdrawn after Deol agreed to settle the outstanding amount. Reports have linked the financial liability to loans taken in connection with his film-production ventures, including Ghayal Returns.
Despite the seriousness of the situation, Deol said he did not view himself as someone burdened by debt to other people.
“The money I owed was all mine. I didn’t borrow it from anyone. I didn’t owe anyone anything. I just had to sell my own assets and pay back.”
He also said that his financial circumstances did not prevent him from enjoying his life.
“Even when I was in debt, I was very happy. I was living my life.”
Financial Problems Came After Film Investments
Deol’s financial difficulties followed a period when he took greater control of his film projects as a producer and director. His directorial ventures included Dillagi, Ghayal Returns and Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas.
The films did not perform as expected commercially, putting considerable financial pressure on the actor. Deol has previously spoken about how the film industry changed during this period and how he struggled to find the right scripts and filmmakers after the success of his earlier blockbusters.
His career had reached major heights in 2001, when Gadar: Ek Prem Katha became one of the biggest hits of his career. He also starred in Indian that year.
‘Money Cannot Decide My Happiness’
Reflecting on his approach to money, Deol said financial success was never the only measure of a good life.
The actor explained that although he faced significant financial obligations, he continued living his life without allowing the debt to completely consume him. His comments highlight a different perspective on financial hardship: the debt was tied to his own assets and business decisions, rather than personal borrowing from friends or family.
Gadar 2 Changed His Career Again
Deol’s fortunes changed dramatically with Gadar 2 in 2023. The film became a major commercial success and revived his career, bringing him a fresh wave of opportunities.
He has since appeared in projects including Jaat, Border 2 and Batwara 1947. His latest release, Batwara 1947, has again placed him in the spotlight alongside Preity Zinta and other prominent actors.
For Deol, the story is therefore not simply about a ₹55.99-crore debt or an auction notice. It is also about a difficult period in his career, the risks associated with investing in films, and his belief that financial setbacks do not necessarily have to determine one’s happiness.
