New Delhi, August 18, 2026: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has made a significant change to its digital and social-media organisation, removing long-time IT Cell chief Amit Malviya from the position after nearly 11 years. Malviya, who took charge of the BJP's IT Cell in 2015, was among the most prominent figures associated with the party's digital communication strategy. He played a key role in managing the BJP's online campaigns, social-media messaging and digital outreach during a period in which political communication increasingly shifted towards online platforms. Under the BJP's newly announced organisational structure led by national president Nitin Nabin, Malviya has been replaced by Deepak Mhaskey, who will oversee the party's IT and social-media operations. The change is being viewed as part of a broader restructuring of the BJP's central organisation. Why Was Amit Malviya Replaced? The BJP has not publicly stated that Malviya has left the party or announced a specific reason for his removal from the IT Cell leadership. However, reports suggest that the party leadership had become increasingly interested in changing its approach to digital communication. The reshuffle comes after recent youth-led protests and criticism of the party's social-media outreach, raising questions about whether the BJP's existing digital strategy was sufficiently responsive to changing public sentiment. A senior BJP leader cited by ThePrint suggested that the party's leadership had concerns about an overly aggressive communication style, arguing that political messaging also needed greater emphasis on logic and explanation. Deepak Mhaskey Takes Charge The BJP has brought in Deepak Mhaskey as part of the new digital setup. Mhaskey has an academic background and experience involving electoral data and public administration. His appointment could indicate an attempt to give the party's digital machinery a more data-driven and issue-focused approach. The change comes alongside several other important appointments in the BJP's new national team, including the return of senior leaders such as Smriti Irani and Ram Madhav to prominent organisational roles. Malviya's Future Remains Open While headlines describing Malviya as having "exited the BJP" have circulated online, the available reports do not establish that he has resigned from the party itself. His removal from the IT Cell therefore appears, at present, to be a change in organisational responsibility rather than a confirmed departure from the BJP. After more than a decade at the centre of the party's digital operations, Malviya's removal nevertheless marks a significant transition in the BJP's online strategy and raises questions about the direction its social-media machinery will take under its new leadership.
