Human Remains Found 15 Miles From Nancy Guthrie’s Home, Sheriff Says No Connection to Case So Far

Tucson, Arizona, August 18, 2026: Human remains discovered in a desert area roughly 15 miles from the Tucson home of missing 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie have drawn fresh attention to the high-profile disappearance, but authorities say there is currently no indication that the remains are connected to her case.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said its Search and Rescue deputies responded after human remains were reported near West Ajo Way and South La Cholla Boulevard in the Tucson area. Investigators believe the remains may have been at the location for an extended period.
Authorities Say No Link to Guthrie Case So Far
Despite the remains being discovered relatively close to Guthrie’s home, investigators have stressed that there is no evidence at this time connecting them to her disappearance.
The sheriff’s department said the discovery does not currently provide a new lead in the investigation into Guthrie’s disappearance. The remains will nevertheless be examined as authorities work to establish their identity and circumstances surrounding their death.
The location is approximately 15 miles from the home where Guthrie was last seen in the Catalina Foothills area of Tucson.
Nancy Guthrie Disappeared in January
Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Today show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, disappeared from her Tucson-area home on January 31, 2026. She was reported missing the following day.
The FBI says investigators believe Guthrie was last seen at her residence on the evening of January 31. Authorities have been investigating the disappearance as a kidnapping and have sought information about an unidentified man captured on surveillance footage near her home.
The case has attracted national attention, particularly because Guthrie’s family has continued to make public appeals for information about her whereabouts.
Ransom Notes Remain Part of Investigation
Investigators have also been examining ransom notes connected to the case. Authorities recently released the contents of two notes in an effort to generate new leads and identify the person responsible for writing them.
One of the notes reportedly claimed that Guthrie had died, although authorities have not publicly confirmed the claim. Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and are asking the public to provide any information that could help identify those involved.
